Bronx Latin Teacher Spotlight – Aida Rosenbaum

I teach Earth Science and AP Environmental Science at Bronx Latin. I was inspired to become a teacher because the neighborhood school that I grew up in did not offer a decent education at the time. I could not stand for that type of inequality to persist. When I finished college I went back to that same school and taught there for 6 years.
Q: What is your favorite part about teaching?
A: I love when students are inspired by something I taught them and they come to me later to tell me about something they saw or heard outside of school that was related to our class. That shows me that students are really interested and thinking outside of school.
Q: What is your least favorite part about teaching?
A: My least favorite part about teaching is grading lab reports and essays. However,  I know it is absolutely essential to give feedback to my students so they can learn how to improve.
Q:What do your consider Bronx Latin’s strengths?
The strength of Bronx Latin is it’s cohesive culture. The consistency of policies and expectations keeps the environment safe and the academic level rigorous. Using data from mid-year simulations in every Regents class helps every teacher tailor review in a productive way and gets up the test results we are all looking for.
Q;What challenges do you face at Bronx Latin?
A: We do face a challenge of a lack of space. We share a campus and every classroom is booked for basically every period of the day. This make it very difficult to find time within the school day to prepare for lab activities or make changes to the classroom set up.
Q;Where would you like to be in 5 years?
A: In 5 years I would like to be coaching teachers more frequently and still teaching one or two classes. I feel like I have a lot to offer my peers but at the same time I love being in the classroom with students so I do not want to give that up entirely.
